Technical Skill
It goes without saying that a high level of technical competence (relative to their level) is desirable in candidates who are being shortlisted by MSPs. For small to mid-sized teams a broad skill set is generally suitable, with larger businesses typically favouring vertical knowledge for use as a Subject Matter Expert.
MSP Experience
Experience with a MSP technology stack is highly valued, particularly Remote Monitoring & Management (RMM), and Professional Service Automation (PSA) software. Additionally, work with Remote Access, Ticketing, Anti-Virus, Security, Recovery and Backup tools will help your hire hit the ground running.
Work Ethic
Hardly unique to MSPs, but nonetheless a trait which will help to produce positive outcomes. We prioritise identifying professionals who demonstrate high levels of integrity, diligence, and a commitment to doing their best, no matter the circumstances. Dependable members of the team who can motivate themselves are always in demand.
Communication
To support a varied end-client user base, candidates should possess strong active listening skills and be able to articulate their ideas and solutions clearly. Effective communication will also help to maintain positive relationships as client expectations will be managed more professionally.
SLA Focus
Delivering MSP solutions which align with pre-agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA) are critical to managing client expectations. Candidates that have a strong understanding and focus on SLA principles, and how/when to communicate and begin the escalation process are always interesting.
A Proud Techie
Truly and totally obsessed with all things technology - maybe they used to tinker with broken devices in the garage, and now have a custom build PC or homelab. These attributes of relentless curiosity and technology discovery, placed with a problem-solving mindset are solid building blocks for MSP talent.
Resourceful
Being able to instinctively resolve user tickets is great, but having the ability to dig deep and utilise available resources in a timely manner is critical. Having a resourceful and curious attitude when used alongside a strong knowledge base, documentation, guides, and colleagues will differentiate applicants.
Punctual
So much emphasis is placed upon delivering results against pre-agreed timescales within MSP teams, good time management sits towards the top of sought after qualities. Technical talent who can plan how to use their time efficiently will often maximise productivity, allowing more to be achieved, often in less time.
Teachable
MSPs elevate themselves by consistently exploring emerging technologies and trends. Job seekers that align with this ethos by seeking professional development are always attractive. Expect to see certifications from MS, Azure, AWS, Google, Oracle, Cisco, CISSP, CompTIA, ITIL etc.
Collaborative
Applicants who are happy to work collaboratively and are confident sharing their ideas will help to improve productivity in a Service Desk or project-based environment. In the correct moderation, this attribute supports team building and an increased sense of purpose for everyone who contributes.
A Documenter
It's vital that technicians understand your client's environment and the history of any previous issues and resolutions. When job seekers prioritise full and proper documentation, you can be sure that you'll be welcoming someone who will adhere to processes and that everything is correctly implemented and auditable.
Adaptable
One of the key soft skills in an MSP environment is adaptability. We always discuss how comfortable prospects are with changes and their ability to remain flexible when encountering different challenges.
